turkey day is over

| | Comments (1)

last week was a culinary adventure, especially having guests in town. Of course we ate tons of turkey, but we got a chance to try some restaurants we hadn't been to before AND show off some of our favorite places to eat. Of course a shout out goes to Wayne's amazing braised duck, which disappeared on Thanksgiving in about twenty seconds.

My favorite, of course, was the Union Square Cafe. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. The service was impeccable, the food was outstanding, the atmosphere was nice (although I could have done without the obnoxious party of four from L.A. next to us). For an appetizer I had meltingly tender gnocchi with mushrooms and prosciutto in a butter sauce, it was exactly the right portion. The Seared Sea Scallops with Wild Mushrooms, Pearl Onions, Bacon, Red Wine and Baby Arugula Greens had been cooked to perfection, with the scallops being cooked just to firmness. I loved that everything on the menu sounded appealing, and that I would have been happy ordering anything on the menu. There are so few restaurants where I could say that.

Other highlights of our little culinary adventure included Sushi D, a nice sushi joint on De Kalb Ave; Zaytoon's, on Myrtle Ave, their hummus is definitely worth checking out; Spice, a Thai restaurant in Chelsea, one of my favorite cheap lunch spots because of the tasty food and "hip" ambiance (yes sometimes I like that); Li Hua, a Korean restaurant on the corner of Grand St. and Baxter St. that makes kickass bibimbap and kalbi (order extra kimchi!).

I can't wait to go visit her, I'm rather excited to see how Berlin's changed in the five years since I visited there. Plus it'll be nice to visit someone who can actually speak German. About all I know is airport ("flughafen") and train station ("bahnhof").

Of course this does not make up for the fact that he drags (only white) socks around the house and puts them in his water bowl or that he runs around the house throwing a tantrum because he hasn't gotten enough attention. But yes he is still cute.

site cruft.

what's up with this site getting crufty? I feel like it was just yesterday that I put this whole thing together, and now all the content is out of date. The artwork is out of date, the photos are out of date (well actually now i just post them on flickr, which didn't exist two years ago!), my design work is out of date. Sigh. I know, I know, I just need to move the whole site over to some kind of CMS/blogging system so I can add stuff more easily. Even Movable Type is getting crufty - I'm still on 2.6.whatever - so I'm seriously thinking about moving over to Wordpress.

Who knows, maybe I'll give the whole site a facelift. But then that means changing my business cards...my invoices...my resume...eek. OK, maybe i'll hold off on that. But perhaps I should get this all done as a New Year's resolution type of thing.

It seems like keeping a personal site up to date is a full time job in and of itself!

posting promises.

yes, yes. i am adding more posts now. lots to talk about. What my goal is, now, with this blog, is to write more about the places that i've gone to eat at. because i can never remember specifically what i've eaten after a while. plus then stepha can use this as a guide when she can't figure out where to go for dinner.

So from now on, each restaurant that I talk about will get an entry. unless i'm talking about danny meyer or food in general. At least this is what i'm going to try to do. Look out for the address in the extended entry.

plus more pictures. more of everything! stay tuned!
