stupid accident

| | Comments (0)

so last wednesday i was washing my dishes, enjoying my evening at home. kind of spaced out. Before I could even blink, a glass I was holding slipped out of my hand and shattered in the sink, and suddenly i was looking at my thumb bleeding all over the place. At first, I thought it wasn't too bad, but then i realized it was a deep cut and that I would probably need stitches. At that point I totally freaked out because I was home alone and I couldn't think of what to do.

So I called Stepha at work and freaked her out, and she called 911. To make a long story short, I ended up in the emergency room, and I was there until 5 AM. Yes, you heard right, 5 A.M. Mostly just waiting around. Needless to say I was kicking myself for not bringing a stack of books and magazines. Instead I had a crazy man harass me about how big the needle for putting in the stitches was going to be.

And yes my thumb is OK now. I actually didn't get any stitches because the doctor thought that there wasn't really anything left to stitch up. Ew. I've been training myself to use my right hand, and I can sort of type. I graduated from gauze to a bandaid yesterday. Ooh exciting.

slight differences

I've been getting better at telling the difference between the sound of a gunshot, firecrackers, cars backfiring, and other miscellaneous loud and sudden noises. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. It used to sound the same to me, but as there's so much of it going on lately, I've started noticing the differences in cadence, and the way each sound echoes. Or maybe I've just become more aware of it. And usually the sound that I associate with "gunshot" coincides with the sound of sirens. Not always. but that usually backs up my suspicion that it was a gunshot.

It's strange how you can be completely unaware of what's going on in your environment, but then suddenly something can completely jolt you out of whatever you've been doing. But only if you have been paying attention in some other way - like you have to be receptive to it. A year ago, I would have thought that a gunshot was a firecracker and not really thought anything more past that.
