you know it's spring when...

| | Comments (1)

so are you sensing a theme here? Yes, I need it to be spring already. Although I haven't even gotten a chance these season to hit the slopes, I'll gladly pass up that privilege for a good dose of sunshine and 65 degree temps.

So yes I know that spring is coming because some city workers actually came down my street today and cleaned it! (it's unheard of in this part of the city.) One guy was shoveling all the nasty dirt and leaves from the corner of the curb into the middle of the street, and then a big street cleaning machine came down the street and gobbled all of the dirt up.

It would have worked perfectly except that THERE WERE CARS STILL PARKED ON THE SIDE OF THE STREET. OK, so in most other parts of the city you actually get towed on street cleaning day. Now granted it wasn't official street cleaning day, but for chrissake this only happens once a year if we're lucky!! But no, the city just left nice little flyers on people's cars yesterday asking politely if they would please move their cars, but that they wouldn't get tickets or towed.

Well, they sure as hell aren't that nice about it in the South End...or anywhere else for that matter.

So perhaps if I"m motivated (and the weather cooperates the next few weekends) I'll be going out and sweeping some of the dirt that got left behind because there were cars still parked on the street.

Kaya and shabu-shabu

So last night was the last time that I will be able to eat at Kaya, whose sushi is much better than the overrated Fukakyu down the street. Apparently the owners are converting Kaya into a shabu-shabu themed restaurant.

What is shabu shabu you ask? Well I was dying to know too. It's hot-pot cooking, sort of like fondue but with soup instead of cheese and meat instead of bread. At Kaya they've already installed these hi-tech warmers at each booth, they're these large shiny black ceramic plates that are bolted into the table.

Yay more gimmicks! It's sort of like do-it-yourself hibachi. Apparently it's going to be the only "full-service shabu-shabu" in Boston. woohoo.
